​Ben Weiner, a 2003 Arts & Sciences alumnus, connects Nicaraguan coffee growers with roasters through his social enterprise Gold Mountain Coffee Growers. ​The result: a better cup of coffee, like the new Wash U Blend, and better pay for producers.

Unusual skin cancer linked to chronic allergy to metal orthopedic implant

In rare cases, patients with allergies to metals such as nickel develop persistent skin rashes after metal devices are implanted near the skin. New School of Medicine research suggests these patients may be at increased risk of an unusual and aggressive form of skin cancer.

Cuban filmmaker Rolando screens film

In “Reembarque/Reshipment,” Cuban filmmaker Gloria Rolando examines the lasting influence on Cuban language, music and culture of Haitian laborers, brought to work the sugarcane fields and coffee plantations. At 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, Rolando will host a free screening in the Danforth University Center.

Gott joins Symphony Orchestra on Monday

The bassoon is large and awkward, its warm, mellow harmonics overshadowed by the thunder and lightening of piano and violin. But on Monday, Oct. 13, St. Louis Symphony bassoonist Andrew Gott and the university’s Symphony Orchestra will showcase the bassoon’s expressive potential in a free concert.
